out of the ash was inspired by creation from out of adversity. Building something new from parts old, broken or abandoned. As a thematic bricolage, the sounds that emerge from these collage soundscapes seek to be reborn and revitalised as something new. Every sonic element – no matter how small, like a snowflake or a spiralling flake of ash – is a building block in a soundtrack that celebrates ‘going again’.

Contemplating a combination of personal, societal, environmental and creative concerns, out of the ash became a mosaic of new and remodelled existing sounds forged from such sources as synths and tabletop electric guitar. This foundation is layered with various field recordings, found sounds, samples from TV and cinema, text to speech adaptations of poetry, literature and life, as well as snippets of radio.

As a story of two acts, the first half is more of a jumble of doubts, a flock of thoughts searching for summer in a world where seasons are now so strange. The second half grows slightly less disparate, as if joints in the sculpture are beginning to set and seal. And with this, a certain stoic hope starts to grow out between mended cracks – an aural kintsugi – pointing towards a truth that light will overcome dark, if you wish for it enough.

out of the ash (fire) is a thematic sister to the previous works atal mor (water), scree (earth) and aerial (air), completing a natural elements series.
